Descaling your automatic coffee machine: Professional maintenance for coffee with hard water

Descaling Your Fully Automatic Coffee Machine – The Only Guide That Truly Helps

If the red light on your fully automatic coffee machine comes on, it's usually too late. In my 12 years as a coffee sommelier and maintenance technician, I have descaled over 400 automatic machines. This guide contains no platitudes, but concrete values, manufacturer differences, and the three mistakes 80% of all users make when descaling.

When does a fully automatic coffee machine need to be descaled?

The answer depends on the water. For water hardness above 12 °dH, descaling should be done every 6–8 weeks. For under 8 °dH, 3 months are sufficient. Brew Blend's rule of thumb: Better to descale twice too often than once too late.

Can vinegar be used for descaling?

No – acetic acid attacks the EPDM seals in brewing groups. Only sulfamic acid-based descalers are recommended. Details on perfect care can be found in our ultimate brewer guide.

What happens if you never descale your fully automatic coffee machine?

In three phases: Phase 1: Loss of taste. Phase 2: Heating coil calcifies, temperature drops. Phase 3: Pump pressure increases, risk of defect. Source: Own workshop data, 2019–2025.

How do I care for special machines like Philips?

For special systems like the Philips AquaClean, there are specific maintenance intervals. Here you will find everything on the topic: Descaling Philips Fully Automatic Coffee Machine with AquaClean.

The 3 Descaling Mistakes That Destroy Machines

  1. Leaving descaler on for too short a time. At least 30 minutes at room temperature.
  2. Only descaling the water tank. The milk system often collects more limescale than the tank.
  3. Not running a rinse cycle after descaling. Run at least 3 cycles of fresh water through.

Maintenance Calendar by Water Hardness

Water Hardness (°dH) Descaling Every
0–8 (soft) 12 weeks
9–14 (medium) 6–8 weeks
15–21 (hard) 4 weeks
22+ (very hard) 3 weeks

Why Professional Care is Important

Sulfamic acid reacts selectively with limescale without attacking materials. After your machine has been freshly descaled, we recommend our high-quality beans for the best taste experience: Buy coffee beans for automatic machines.
